State Government was motivating farmers to adopt herbal cultivation to strengthen their economy. This was stated by Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister, while addressing a mammoth public meeting at Chauntra in Joginder Nagar Sub-Division of district Mandi, after he dedicated newly constructed building of Primary Health Centre, completed at a cost of Rs. 75 lakhs, to the residents of the area today. He said that the State Government would be spending Rs. 17 crore over construction of gymnasiums in each of the gram panchayats to help rural youth exercise and channelise their energy. He appealed to the rural youth to form Yuvak Mandals in large number and go for such activities.

Chief Minister said that majority of villages in Jogindernagar segment with population of above 250 had been connected with road connectivity while rest of the villages were being connected in a phased manner. He said all of the 52 gram panchayats in the segment had been connected with road in Jogindernagar. He said that international funding agencies had adjudged HImachal Pradesh the best State in the country which had utilized funds and achieved objectives. He announced Rs. 20 lakh for sports stadium ata Chauntra.

Prof. Dhumal said that 10,000 poly houses had already been constructed in the State under Pandit Den Dayal Kisaan Baagwan Samridhi Yojna which had the subsidy component of upto 80 percent of the project cost. He said that it had revolutionised the farm sector and strengthened economy of the progressive farmers in the State. He said that Rs. 300 crore Doodh Ganga Scheme was benefiting dairy farmers immensely where subsidy of 33 percent was available for SC beneficiaries and 25 percent for general category. He said that the State Government had provided Rs. 7 per litre support price to the milk producers during past four years with a view to ensure them remunerative price for the produce in the market. He said dairy farming was the one which could yield immediate returns to the farmers.

Chief Minister said that the experiment of lavender cultivation in Tissa sub-division in district Chamba during previous term of 1998-2003, had been successful since the farmers of the area had make their produce popular in the national and international market. He said that there were a number of schemes aimed at strengthening farm sector. He appealed to the farming community to take benefit of such schemes and strengthen their economy by finding self employment and employment avenues for themselves at their door steps. He said that Rs. 85 crore apple re-plantation scheme was under implementation in the State to replace the old root stock with high yielding varieties of the species. He said that horticulture had been contributing significantly towards state gross domestic economy.

Prof. Dhumal said that the State Government had started Rs. 321 crore Crop Diversification scheme with the cooperation of Japan International Cooperation Association (JICA) which was being implemented in five of the 12 districts in the state which included district Mandi. He said that Bhed Palak Samridhi Yojna had also been launched in the State with a view to strengthen the traditional avocation of sheep rearing in the State where soft loan of Rs. 1.00 lakh was being made available for purchase of 40 sheep and 2 rams with subsidy of Rs. 33,300. He said that there were ample schemes which could generate employment and self employment avenues to the rural youth at their door steps.s

Chief Minister said that it was common man’s government at the helm of affairs and common man was focal point of all the policies and programmes of the State Government. He said that State witnessed silent revolution during past four years and per capita income had increased from Rs. 43 thousand in year 2007 to Rs. 73 thousand during previous financial year. He said that Rs. 65 daily wage had been enhanced during past four years which was a record in itself. He said that the State Government had enhanced the social security pension to 2,77,817 pensioners from Rs. 200 to Rs. 400 and Centre was funding only 9,712 beneficiaries in the State. He appealed to the people to help check female foeticide which was necessary to balance the society. He said that 33 percent reservation was being provided to women in cooperative societies.

Prof. Dhumal also listened to public grievances after the public meeting at Chauntra.

Shri Gulab Singh Thakur, local MLA and Public Works Minister, welcomed the Chief Minister. He said that previous government had been laying foundation stones without making required budgetary provisions. He said that Rs. 9 crore were being spent over health infrastructure creation in Jogindernagar assembly segment. He expressed gratitude towards electors of his home segment for posing faith in him. He said that 100 MW HEP was nearing completion in the segment. He thanked CM for PWD Circle, ITI, Monkey Sterlization Centre, Ayurvedic Pharma College, Institute of Excellence in Medicinal Plants were some of the important milestones established during BJP regime. He said that Chauntra will soon be getting Milk Chilling Plant to facilitate dairy farmers. He said that Rs. 75 lakh tourism circuit was being implemented to give boost to tourism activities

Featuring a mix of over a 100 school-kids from dozens of Delhi schools, 26 of the best junior (U18) basketball players from around India, and a famous American basketball coach now at the helm of the Indian national side, the first ever Basketball Federation of India (BFI) Junior Expo was an eventful showcase of basketball drills, competitions, and sportsmanship on Tuesday morning at the Sri Ram College of Commerce in New Delhi.

Kenny Natt, the American head coach of India’s Senior Men’s Basketball team, hosted the BFI Junior Expo, which was an exhibition of the talents of India’s U18 players, who had been in practice with Natt in Delhi over the past month. The U18 players helped Natt in organising a ‘Youth Basketball Camp’ at the expo, as they taught simple basketball drills to about a 120 basketball-loving kids from around the city. The camp was followed by shooting and skills competitions between the U18 players, and finally, the events of the day were capped off with a thrilling Junior All Star Game.

Children from different schools such as DPS (Mathura Road), Montfort School, Rockfield School, Modern School (Barakhamba), St. Michael’s School, Rosary School, Nirmal Bhartiya School, the SRCC College, and many more were present to pick up valuable hoop tips from the experienced coach and the young All Star players at the Youth Basketball Camp. The All Stars taught drills to improve passing, lay-ups, defensive movement, and shooting ability of the attending school-kids.

After the camp, Natt organised a Skills Challenge for some of his players, a competition which tested them for a mixed skill-set of dribbling, passing and shooting. This challenge was won by Nitin Chopade, while Siddharth Chouhan finished at second place. In the next competition – the Big Man Medley – Natt tested the taller players for their inside and outside shooting skills. This competition was won by Aravind A. with Karan Joshua ending at second place. Finally, a 3-point shooting contest was held, won by Loveneet Singh. Siddharth Chouhan ended at second place.

The eventful day concluded with an All Star Game between two sides amongst the Junior players. After leading at the end of the first half by just two points, ‘Team Red’ played good defense in the second half to take a 13 point lead over ‘Team White’ as the game reached its last few minutes. But a dramatic 15-2 run gave Team White its first lead in the game. In an exciting finish, it was Ajay Pratap Singh of Team Red who hit a lay-up and a free-throw with only a second left in the game to give his side a memorable win, 55-54. Aravind A. was named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of this game.

Natt thanked the participating players and the school-kids who had attended to learn and experience a showcase of top-quality basketball. “The school-children are the future of basketball in India,” said Natt, “I hope to see them becoming All Stars one day, too!”

Kenny Natt, the American head coach of India’s Senior Men’s Basketball team, will be hosting a Basketball Federation of India (BFI) Junior (U18) Expo at the Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) basketball court in New Delhi on Saturday, November 26th from 9 AM. Natt is inviting school kids from across the city to attend an open ‘Youth Basketball Camp’ with India’s best U18 basketball players. The camp will be followed by a skills challenge amongst the U18 stars and an ‘All Star Game’ of the best Junior players in India.

Delhi school-kids under the age of 18 are invited to take part in the Youth Basketball Camp with Natt and India’s Junior players from 9 AM in the morning on Saturday.

Natt, formerly head coach of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the USA, has been serving as the head coach of India’s Men’s squad for the past five months. He led the team to the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship in Wuhan, China, earlier this year.

Following the Junior National Championship in New Delhi in July, Natt picked around 30 of the best young basketball players from across India to take part in National Coaching Camp with him in Delhi over the month of November. The showcase on Saturday will serve as a type of exposure and evaluation camp for these probables for Natt to recruit players for India’s Senior Men’s side.

 “I will be observing the future talent and observing their skill level at this showcase,” Natt said, “The event will be like an NBA combine, featuring a lot of basketball drills, practice, and fun!”

Natt has extended an open invitation to basketball loving children from High Schools and Junior Schools from across the city to attend a ‘Youth Basketball Camp’ with India’s Junior probable. The Junior players will help out in the Youth Camp to instruct basketball fundamentals and drills to the local school kids.

The Mini Camp will be followed by several Basketball Competitions for the Junior probables, including a Skills Challenge, Three-Point Shooting Contest, and a Shooting Medley Contest.

The last event of the day will be an All Star Game pitting the best Junior probable of India against each other.

An Awards Ceremony will follow to reward players for their performances in the earlier camps, challenges, and All Star Game.

“The BFI is always looking to expose the game of basketball and generating as much interest for it as possible,” said Natt, “We want people in India to realise that basketball is a fun and competitive sport. The future of the game is very bright. Hopefully this event will generate more interest for the game. I will look forward to organising more such events in the future in other parts of the country.”

The Conference of Ministers of Youth Services & Sports of States/UTs has passed unanimously a resolution calling for compulsory introduction of Games and Sports as a part of curriculum of education in schools at all levels both in Centre and States with a view to give effect to the mandate of the Right of Education Act, 2009. This will encourage Sports Culture and broad based Games and sports in the country. The Resolution passed in the Conference held here today, states as under :

“Games and Sports should be introduced compulsorily as part of curriculum of education in schools at all levels both in Centre and States. Further, one period each day should be allocated for Games and Sports in all schools. The students’ participation should be graded and evaluated at par with other subjects and adequate weightage should be given to participation in Games and Sports. This will encourage sports culture and broad-base Games and Sports.”

Earlier, while addressing the Conference of Ministers of Youth Affairs & Sports of States/UTs here today, Shri Ajay Maken, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs & Sports has called for a comprehensive and multi-pronged strategy for developing sports culture and youth development in the country. He said that there is need for a strong policy for youth development, their employable skill, mass participation in sports and for promotion of strong sporting culture. Shri Maken said “Between the last and the forthcoming 2011 census, the Youth population is expected to increase by 77 million while during 2011-12 the number would increase by 4 million. In the districts (643) of India-backward and left-wing extremism affected, what is worrisome is that the anti-social elements are targeting the youth from poor families to get their recruits. In the backward regions of our country the main concerns are education, health care, livelihoods and jobs. These are factors hindering the mainstreaming of youth in these regions. This calls for a comprehensive and multi-pronged strategy for developing sports culture and youth development in the country.”

Explaining the themes of this year’s Conference, which are encouraging ‘Sports for all’ and ‘empowering of youth through employable skills’, Shri. Maken strongly advocated for making sports as a part of school curriculum and also suggested that this be assessed as a subject. He said “when, we are talking about sports excellence, how can we achieve when our school going children have very low level physical fitness. We cannot become sporting nation unless the school children are physically fit.” In view of this, Shri. Maken urged the States Sports Ministers to take up this issue on priority basis with respective Education Ministers in their States. Besides, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), Bharat Scouts and Guides (BSG), National Social Service (NSS) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), local panahayats, youth clubs of NYKS, State Youth Clubs, local school/college, and self-help grounds will also play a major role in promoting sports activities in grassroots level, Shri. Makan added.

Giving details of initiatives taken by the Sports Ministry since last Conference, Shri Maken said that Ministry has taken several steps towards achieving the goals of integration of ‘sports’ and ‘physical education’ in the school system; bringing ‘sports law’ for sports governance, establishing a National Institute of Coach Education, Patiala, National Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine at New Delhi and taking steps to declare Rajiv Gandhi National Institute for Youth Development (RGNIYD) as an Institute of National Importance.

Speaking about empowering youth with employability skills, Shri. Maken stated that the Ministry has introduced Youth with Employability Skill (YES) Project in 59 Districts of North Eastern States with an objective to train the youth to gain employable skills. This project is being organized with the support of National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). Shri Maken suggested that for successful implementation of the programme, there is need to conduct the skill gap analysis through a market survey and matching this with the hopes and aspirations of youth of that area.

Sh. Desh Prem Azad, a former Cricket Coach, is living in indigent condition, for his medical treatment. Taking cognizance of his poor financial position, the Sports Minister has sanctioned this ex-gratia. Shri Azad captained Punjab in Ranji trophy in 1964. He had distinction of having coached and trained Shri Kapil Dev, Chetan Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Ashok Malhotra & Yograj Singh.

Under the Scheme of National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports provides lump sum financial assistance to outstanding sportspersons of the past, who are facing financial distress.

Basketball fans in Lucknow were given a visual treat on Friday evening as the best under-14 teams from around India clashed in the Finals of the 38^th Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship for Boys & Girls in the city’s RDSO court. Eight days of exciting hoops action ended in fitting manner as the boys’ final saw Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra fight neck-no-neck in a classic final, which was finally won by Maharashtra. The Girls’ championship was a repeat of last year’s final between Chhattisgarh and Karnataka, and for the seventh consecutive year, it was Chhattisgarh who emerged as Sub Jr champions.

Basketball fans couldn’t have asked for a better final than the face-off between Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh Boys, two teams with contrasting but effective styles. The teams stayed close throughout: Andhra Pradesh using taking advantage of their length and speed, while Maharashtra relied on their skill and passing. AP had a slim, one point lead at the end of the half, but couldn’t extend on the advantage: neither side was able to go over more than four point of their opponent for the majority of the game.

With the game reaching its last moments, Maharashtra had overturned the score and had a three point lead in the fourth quarter, thanks to their talented guards who penetrated and passed very well all night. AP made some crucial mistakes in the end, and Maharashtra’s Zaid Shaikh pulled out big, level-headed plays to give his side a 61-58 win and the National championship.

“We had practiced very hard for this championship, and came ready to dominate,” said Shaikh, “We had beaten AP in a blowout early in this championship, so we had to be wary of their backlash tonight. Luckily, we were able to play well in the end and win – our team’s strength was our great combination.”

M. Siva Durga of AP led all scorers in the final with 16 points.

The girls’ final was a repeat of last year’s final between Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. Chhattisgarh Girls have been an unstoppable force in the Sub-Junior level, and win another big victory on Friday, won their 10^th championship in 11 years. Chhattisgarh, who have been the best team in the competition, were in no mood for a slip-up in the final, as they started strong and refused to slow down against their opponents. Saving their best defensive performance for the finale, Chhattisgarh outscored Karnataka 36-7 in a devastating first half.

Chhattisgarh’s defense focused around stopping Karnataka’s Lopamudra, who had been the best individual player in the girls’ section in the tournament. With Lopa on check, Chhattisgarh were able to cruise in the second half and celebrate their seventh consecutive Sub-Junior national title with a 64-21 victory. Riya Verma led Chhattisgarh in the final with 23 points.

“We are a strong team because we are very united,” said P. Divya, the captain of the Chhattisgarh side, “We were prepared for this team because we had defeated them in the final last year, and in this year’s tournament, we knew that our team was too strong for any opponent.”

Earlier on Friday, the 3^rd/4^th place games were held: In the boys’ game, Punjab overcame a slow start against Chhattisgarh to make a strong comeback and win 70-47. Punjab were led by Guksewala (21 points) and Abhi (16). For Chhattisgarh, Mithun, who had scored 46 points in a loss to AP in the semi-final only the previous night, led the scoring charge of his team with 18 points in the 3^rd/4^th place playoff.

In the girls’ game, Maharashtra played a strong second quarter to overturn the score against Kerala and then race to a 48-37 win to clinch third place. Maharashtra were led by Veera who had 16 points.

Mr. V Ramachandran, the Director-General of RDSO, was the chief guest at the final and handed out the prize-winners trophies. “I was very glad to see the talent on display here and wish to see many of these players representing India one day,” said Ramachandran, “My best wishes go out to all those who took part in this championship. I would also like to thank the Basketball Federation of India (BFI), the Uttar Pradesh Basketball Association (UPBA), and RDSO for conducting this big event.

For the first time in the Sub-Junior nationals, individual prizes were given for the Most Promising Players of the tournament. With the award, the individual players were also given a cash prize of Rs. 5000 each. The awards were given to:

The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) have announced the U18 boys’ and girls’ teams that will represent India at the first-ever FIBA Invitational 3×3 Youth World Championship in the city of Rimini, Italy, from September 9-11, 2011. Teams from India will be amongst 36 boys’ and 24 girls’ teams from around the world taking part in this competition.
3×3 Basketball is the formalised version of three-on-three, half-court basketball. The format got its first major international test at the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore. The fast-paced games are played on one half of the FIBA regulation court. Each team contingent will consist of four players, of whom three will be on court at any given time, and one coach.
The Indian U18 girls’ team will be led by Pete Gaudet, the American basketball coach who is also the head coach of India’s Senior Women’s team. U18 Boys will be led by Coach Kulwinder Singh Gill from Madhya Pradesh.

Ajay Maken, Union Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs & Sports, announced the demerger of the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala from Sports Authority of India (SAI). Aimed at resuscitating and establishing the Academic character of the Institute, the move would ensure that NIS, Patiala emerges an ‘Institution of National Importance’, excelling in Sports Academics and education, training and recognition/certification of coaches, Shri Maken said this, while addressing a press conference here today.

The Sports Minister stressed that the primary role envisaged for NIS would be that of producing world class and qualified coaches for various sporting disciplines rather than the currently prevalent, dominant role of holding training camps for athletes. This reorientation, he hoped, would ensure proper perspective to various spheres of sports and its development.

A cabinet note will be moved for introducing a bill to this effect in the next/ winter session of Parliament, Shri Maken informed

State Government would be considering upgradation of the Indira Gandhi Medical College as Medical University or Post Graduate Institute affiliated to the Central University to carry research and development activities in the field of medical science. This was revealed by Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister on the occasion of foundation stone laying ceremony of the Obstetric and Gynecology Block in Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla to be constructed at a cost of about Rs. 20 crore here today.

Chief Minister said that the IGMC had emerged as a premier institute of medical education in the State where best of the medical services were being made available. He said that the State Government would be considering its upgradation keeping in view the increasing number of patients and requirement of medical professionals so that best of the medical education and diagnostic services were available to the people within the State and they did not had to go outside the state to avail such services.

Prof. Dhumal said that the State Government had always been considerate towards the genuine demands of its employees and had been providing them various financial and promotional benefits from time to time. He announced that all the nurses engaged under Rogi Kalyan Samiti (RKS) and serving in different health institutions would also be paid contractual remuneration at par with contractual nurses. He said that RKS nurses who were getting Rs. 7,500 as monthly contractual remuneration would now be eligible to get Rs. 13,500, at par with the other contractual nurses in the State.

Along with tryouts scheduled with the WNBA teams Chicago Sky and LA Sparks which were announced over a week ago, Indian Basketball star has now been invited to tryout and practice with a third WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) team during her USA trip: the San Antonio Silver Stars. Jose will be in America from April 23 – May 8, during which time she will be the first ever Indian basketball player to get an opportunity to try out for the WNBA.

Jose (26) has been a superstar for Indian basketball for several years: she has captained the Indian Women’s side at the FIBA Asia Women’s Basketball Championship in 2009, where she was leading scorer in Asia. She has represented India in several major tournaments, including the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Australia and the 2010 Asian Games basketball championship in Guangzhou (China). Jose is currently working for Southern Railway in Chennai, and, representing Indian Railways, has won seven consecutive National Basketball Championship titles. She was also the first Indian women to play professionally in Australia, when she represented the Ringwood Hawks, a lower division team in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL), and won the league’s Most Valuable Player award in 2008.

The Punjab Governor and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Mr. Shivraj V. Patil while presiding over a high level
meeting today at Punjab Raj Bhawan, reviewed the security and other arrangements regarding the visit of dignitaries from India and
Pakistan who are coming to watch semi final Cricket match going to be played at PCA Stadium Mohali between India and Pakistan on 30th March, 2011.
Mr. Patil gave clear cut instructions and guidelines to all the concerned officers to ensure that all arrangements should be made fool proof. He said no excuse would be tolerated at all from any corner. He further said that law and order should be maintained at any cost. He also asked the officers to discharge their duties dedicatedly and devotedly to make this event success and memorable.

Haryana Chief Minister Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda  today  said that India would certainly win Cricket World Cup.

The Chief Minister, who was interacting with media persons in Rohtak today said that on the basis of the performance of our cricket team,he could say that India would win.

India and Pakistan are to play semifinal of the cricket world cup at Mohali on Wednesday.

Mr said that in case  Pakistan’s leaders come to see cricket match in India, it would strengthen relations and mutual understanding between the two countries. India wants better relations with its neighbors, added Mr Hooda.

The Prime Minister will be visiting Mohali to watch the World Cup Cricket semifinal match between India and Pakistan. The Prime Minister has invited the President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani and Mrs. Gilani of Pakistan to visit Mohali to join him and the millions of cricket fans of the subcontinent to watch the match.
