Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Northern Region, organised a Workshop on General English in order to replenish its Question Bank. It was inaugurated by Shri Saiyid Hamid, IAS (Retd), Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University. In his remarks Sh. Hamid said that activities of SSC have increased much beyond what was originally thought of. He said that the Commission has earned for itself a reputation for integrity. The inevitability of multiple choice objective questions for SSC examinees was discussed even during the early stages soon after SSC was set up, he added.

Shri N.K. Raghupathy, Chairman, SSC presided over. In his presidential address The chairman said that this financial year SSC has already received 38.4 lakh applications and hopes to reach the figure of around 60 lakh applications. This big jump from the earlier around 5.0 lakh annual applications is on account of removal of ban in 2009 on fresh recruitments in certain grades. Selecting right candidates from such a huge number of applications is a big challenge, he said. About 55 academicians from Jamia Millia Islamia University, JNU, University of Delhi, NCERT and other reputed institutions have been associated with the Workshop.

The Commission has a dedicated Question Bank consisting of Objective Type questions on various subjects that form the basis of Open Examinations. As evident, the recruitment is a round-the-year process and the question bank on the various subjects keeps depleting. During the Briefing Session, the intricacies of generating good quality test material were explained by renowned experts and Resource Faculty. The Second Phase of the Workshop is scheduled to be held in the 2nd week of March, 2011. The Workshop has a target of generating 6000 objective type multiple choice questions for testing English Language, Comprehension and Writing Skills in the Commission’s examinations.

Staff Selection Commission is premier organization established by the Government of India, for recruitment of Group B (Non-Gazetted) and Group C Staffs of various Central Government Departments and Ministries all over the country. Northern Region of SSC caters to candidates of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Delhi and handles around 35% of the workload of the Commission in terms of number of application received, candidates selected and nominated to User Departments. In 2010, SSC introduced a new 2-tier, fully objective type examination, viz., Combined Graduate Level Examination for all the posts where Graduation is the minimum educational qualification. This has reduced expenditure considerably and burden of candidates appearing in various examinations and also made it possible to shorten the recruitment cycle (advertisement to selection) to eleven months as against twenty four months in the previous system.
