Cruelty Issues Addressed by Animal Welfare Board of India

The Animal Welfare Board of India is addressing the issues relating to cruelty to animals under the PCA Act 1960 as and when informed such as cruelty to animals during transportation, in slaughter houses, sacrifice of animals in temples, animals exhibited in shows, films / Ad films/Circus/Serials, stray dogs killing/relocation of animals.

AWBI Plan Scheme Since 1962

Under the AWBI Plan Scheme, the Animal Welfare Board of India gives financial assistance to eligible Animal Welfare Organisations for regular scheme viz, maintenance of animal shelters, medicines, purchase of medical equipment and conducting of veterinary camps etc Also, the scheme of Humane Education about Animal Welfare and any other measures relating to the PCA Act comes under AWBI Plan.

In addition to the above, the following four Central Sector Schemes are being implemented by the Animal Welfare Board of India:-

Scheme for shelter House for looking after the animals from 1998-99 onwards

The objective of this scheme is to establish and maintain shelter houses for distressed animals in the country. Primarily, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Society for Prevention of Curelty to Animals (SPCAs) are given grants for construction of boundary walls, shelter, water tank, drains, in-hjouse Dispensary, medical equipment, contingencies etc for a maximum grant of Rs. 22.50 lakhs excluding 10% of AWOs share.

Scheme for Animal Birth Control (ABC) and Immunization of Stray Dogs from 1998-99 onwards

The scheme is meant for controlling the population of stray dogs by sterilization and reducing incidences of rabies by immunization. Non – Governmental Organisations and Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals working in collaboration with local bodies are eligible for this grant.

Under this scheme financial assistance is given @ Rs. 370/- per dog for pre & postoperative care, including medicines and Anti Rabies Vaccine (ARV); and Rs.75/- per dog for catching and relocation of the dog. The grant – in – aid for ABC is to be releasd in two instalments.

Scheme for Provision of Ambulance Services to Animals in Distress from 1998-99 onwards

Under this scheme the animal welfare organizations are given grant for purchase of suitable vehicle for transportation, rescue and also for providing emergency services to animals in distress.

Non-Governmental Organisations are assisted to the extent of 90% of the cost of a suitable vehicle and equipment and fitting thereon. The maximum amount of grant-in-aid is limited to Rs.3.50 lakhs for purchase of vehicle and Rs.1.00 lakhs for equipments and fitting thereon.

Scheme for Relief to Animals during Natural Calamities and Unforeseen Circumstances from 1998-99 onwards

Every year, there are natural calamities in the form of flood, drought, earthquake etc. In such circumstances there is an immediate requirement for provision of fodder, adequate shelter, medical attention etc. for the affected animals. Funds for relief to such animals are provided under this scheme through the AWOs.
