INVC,, New Delhi,, India and China will discuss four issues today namely cooperation in forestry, wildlife, application and regulation of bio-technology in agriculture, environment management and climate change. Talking to media here today before this scheduled meeting between a Chinese delegation led by Mr Hui Liangyu, Vice Premier of China and India, Shri Jairam Ramesh, Minister of State for Environment and Forests(I/C) said, “The first issue is cooperation in the forestry sector. China has announced to bring 40 million hectare of land under forest cover within next 10 years. This makes 4 million hectare area within one year. India has brought four million hectare land under forest cover in last ten years. We would like to learn from China in this field. A high level team from India is visiting China in the third week of April this year to discuss how we can cooperate in the area of forestry research, management and survey. The whole forestry sector will be discussed in detail.” Talking about the second issue the Minister said, “ This is the area of agriculture, specifically role of biotechnology will be discussed. China has made rapid strides in the field of Bt cotton as in India. China is also working on genetically modified rice. The Indian experience and the Chinese experience in these fields will be shared .Scientific challenges and regulatory and bio -safety systems which are in place in both the countries will be shared.” There will be discussion on cooperation in the field of Environment. Shri Jairam said that the visiting Vice Premier regarded Climate Change as the most successful example of bilateral cooperation. He said,” We will be exchanging ideas on what more we need to do.” India is hosting a high level delegation from China led by Mr Hui Yangyu who is the Vice Premier in charge of Agriculture, Rural Development and Forestry. He is accompanied by four very senior Vice Ministers of China. He will meet the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh tomorrow .He will visit Agra and Nagpur to visit the Central Institute of Cotton Research. This morning he visited Indian Agricultural Research Institute an had also interaction with Indian Businessman.
