The 24th Surajkund Crafts Mela grounds attracted a massive crowd today. The first week of the Mela had seen over a lakh of visitors by the evening and was increasing with every minute. It seemed that all roads led to this famous crafts fair. The security and traffic management was regulated so as to suit the swelling number. The special emphasis was given on all the major roads leading to Surajkund so that better ferry services were provided from parking lots situated some distance away from the Mela grounds.
The overwhelming footfall has brought a smile on the faces of the organizers but with a challenge to perform even better for the remaining days. The Chaupal, famous open air stage at the centre of Mela grounds bore the maximum footfall where thousands of visitors danced to foot tapping tunes of the famous folk artists from all across the country and even abroad. ‘Braj Ki Holi’, a famous dance troupe from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh and ‘Sidhi Dhamaal’ of Gujarat were the centre of attraction with the crowd applauding and shouting “Once more”, “Once more”, to see the dancers performing at their best.
A delegation of officers from Kerala Industrial Promotion Bureau, Government of Kerala will be doing a study tour tomorrow on the organizing and functioning of the Mela and exploring the possibilities for organizing a similar fair in Kerala as well.
23 senior diplomats from Sri Lanka will also be present for a couple of days and will be also be conducting an exhaustive study tour of the Mela as they are planning to hold a similar kind of fair in Colombo in July this year.
